Yarrow Sweater by Melody Hoffmann - Kit

For the Yarrow sweater, Melody was inspired by the local and medicinal plants growing in her garden and on the surrounding land. Fascinated by medieval herbalism, she dreamed up a series of patterns on this theme, and Yarrow is the first entry in this collection.

The body of the sweater is knitted in simple stocking stitch, allowing the sleeves to shine. Each sleeve features a striking Estonian inlay motif inspired by the yarrow flower. Melody studied medieval manuscripts for inspiration, where plants are often rendered in a whimsical fashion, wanting to that dreamlike charm to blossom in her design.

Yarrow is knitted from the top-down, beginning with the back, then moving onto the front panels which are joined before working the body in the round. Once the body is complete, stitches are picked up for the sleeves—that’s where the real magic happens. The contrast colour is knitted in Estonian inlay (instructions given in the pattern), and finally French knots are embroidered onto the yarrow motifs, creating a soft, textural effect reminiscent of the flower’s blossoms.

NEEDLES
3. 75mm circular needle for ribbing. 
6mm circular needle for body and sleeves.

GAUGE
14 sts x 23 rows = 10 x 10 cm in stocking stitch on 6mm needle, knitted flat, after blocking.

MATERIALS
Stitch holders or waste yarn; stitch markers; tapestry needle; blocking tools.
