Snaeldan
Located on the banks of Strendur Fjord on the island of Esturoy, the Snældan spinning mill was founded in 1949 by Carl Olsen and is still run today by the Olsen family, with three generations working together in the company. It is now the only wool spinning mill in operation in the Faroe Islands.
In the Faroe Islands, there are around 30% more sheep than humans, and their wool has been an important resource since humans first settled on these isolated islands. The country has an ancient and vibrant knitting culture, which Snaeldan continues through the production of its yarns and knitwear, featuring traditional Faroese patterns.
Snældan started out with a few spinning machines to transform wool into yarn for local customers, which was initially the company's main activity before moving into the manufacture of hand-knitted and then machine-knitted garments. Today, more than half of the wool is sold as knitting yarn, and the rest is made into garments featuring Faroese patterns and sold in their two shops.
