Navia Tradition yarns have been produced to meet a demand for old-style yarns that have been traditionally used in the Faroe Islands for knitting 'skipstroyggjur' or fishermans sweaters.  The word "skipstroyggja" was first recorded at the end of the 18th century, and just like traditional knitwear found in other Northern European coastal communities, the Faroese have developed their own distinctive styles.

The Faroese sheep breed, like the Icelandic sheep and some of the Scottish breeds, is a dual-coated sheep.  This means that it has a tougher outer layer of wool which keeps the sheep dry, along with a much softer, finer inner layer which keeps it warm.  These can be used separately for different purposes, but sweater yarns were traditionally a mix of both types of wool, to create a sweater which would be both waterproof and insulating.  In the Faroese language, this type of yarn is called "Samfingið" meaning 'unsorted', and results in a characterful, rustic yarn that is especially suitable for warm, durable sweaters and cardigans, similar to Icelandic Lopi yarns.

Although not a supersoft yarn for wearing next to the skin, as a concession to modern tastes and style trends, the Brushed Tradition yarn has been brushed in order to give a softer feel in the hand. Like all rustic yarns, it will soften somewhat over time with wear, and will last you a lifetime.
